East wins first round of state dual, but loses in second to Robbinsville

PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry won the first round of the state dual team playoffs against Cherokee High School on Tuesday by a score of 54-24 and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs to face Robbinsville, who had won earlier against Central Academy of Technology and Arts by a score of 41-28.

East lost to Robbinsville by a score of 59-15 and finished with a 17-12 record overall.

“We had a good season, definitely,” said East Surry Wrestling Coach Darrin Haywood.

He said against Cherokee High School, “We came out aggressively, took a couple of forfeits and the young wrestlers stepped up.”

Haywood said a key match-up in the first round of the match was Andrew Kozlow against Levi Swearigen. The match ended 9-7.

“Andrew came out aggressive early and got Levi off his game, Levi gave up an escape and Andrew went for it and he got it.”

The scores in the wrestling match between the Cardinals and the Cherokee Braves are as follows.

At 106, East’s Eddie Nunez won by a forfeit. At 113, East’s Timmy Norman won 12-1 over Cherokee’s Michael George.

At 120, East’s Austin Bryant pinned Ethan Swearigen in 4:20. At 132, East’s Eddie Scott won over Austin Podea 16-8.

At 138, East’s Eli Russell was pinned by Jaron Bradley. At 145, East’s Jimmy Spear pinned Tyler Brown in 2:10.

At 152, East’s Keanu Kelly pinned Maria George in 37 seconds. At 160, Cherokee’s Tavi Rivera pinned Travis Pugh at 2:24.

At 170, Cherokee’s Doriean Walkingstick pinned East’s Gage Edwards in 52 seconds. At 182, East’s Mitchell Flynt won by forfeit.

At 192, East’s Cody Gaskill won by a forfeit. At 220, East’s Jacob Chattin won against Cherokee’s Raymond Taylor by 6-2. At 285, Cherokee’s Michael Montelongo pinned Josh Stevens in 1:59.

East Surry had some momentum after the win as the team moved on to meet the Robbinsville White Knights on the mat at home. The White Knights came into the match-up against the Cardinals with a 16-7 record.

East’s Cody Gaskill started the match against the Knights with a 23-5 overall record and wrestled Cameron Crowe. Gaskill won by a pin. Gaskill was third in the state last year.

Then, at 106, East’s Eddie Nunez won in a forfeit.

Then things for the Cards began to go downhill. Irvin Portugal at 113 pinned East’s Timmy Norman. At 120, Zack Orr pinned East’s Austin Bryant. At 126, Kade Guffey won a major decisions over East’s Andrew Kozlow. At 132, Lane Millsaps’ won a 4-1 decision over East’s Eddie Scott. At 138, East’s Eli Russell was pinned by Logan Carver.

At 145, East’s Jimmy Spear won a 2-1 decision over Corey Locklear for a breath of fresh air.

At 152, Keanu Love then lost a major decision to Joey Cable. At 160, Bobby Pruitt pins East’s Gage Edwards. At 170, Lovin Creed pinned East’s Mitchell Flynt. At 195, Spencer McCoy pinned East’s Jacob Chattin. Michael Garrison pinned East’s Josh Stevens at 220.
