HENDERSONVILLE — Mount Airy and East Surry watched four wrestlers each reach the top four in the 1A West Regional Tournament in Hendersonville Saturday.

The top four in each weight class advance to the state 1A tournament next weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum.

At 106, East Surry’s Eddie Nunez was in the championship match. The results of that final were not available at press time. However, just by reaching the final, Nunez is qualified for the state tournament.

East Surry’s Timmy Norman finished third at 113. He won his first two matches, lost in the semifinals, then won two matches in the consolation brackets to finish 4-1 for the weekend.

Mount Airy Coach Steve Braune said one Bear finished second and three finished in fourth place: Shay Wilson (138), Zaqwan Dobson (195) and Mason Timmerman (220).

At 145, Triston Mabry won his way into the final, but faced two-time state champion Jorge Lima, West Wilkes. Lima won a technical fall 15-0.

Mabry had to beat East Surry’s Jimmy Speer in the semifinal, then Speer won another match to reach the third-place match.

Justin Todd, Alleghany, edged Speer 3-1, so all four wrestlers going to state are from this area. Todd also beat Jake Shore in the consolation semifinals, another area wrestler from East Wilkes.

At 138, Wilson lost in the first round to Bishop’s Nick Trego, then he went on a tear in the consolation bracket, winning three close decisions. Unfortunately, he faced Trego again in the consolation finals and fell 4-3, Braune said.

At 160, South Stokes’ T.J. Whaley was fourth and moves on.

At 170, Mount Airy’s Landon Mumford won his first two matches, then fell to Hayden Sutphin, West Wilkes. In the consolation semis, Mumford faced Bishop’s Frank LaDew, who also lost to Sutphin.

Mumford was injured, and LaDew advanced to state in a forfeit.

At 195, East Surry’s Cody Gaskill pinned Dobson in the third-place match. Both advance to Greensboro along with East Wilkes’ Zack Faircloth.

At 220, Mount Airy’s Mason Timmerman and South Stokes’ Evan Scott were in the semifinals. Both lost and went to the consolation semis.

Rhett Hoy, whom Timmerman beat Friday, came back to beat Scott and take a disqualification over Timmerman for third place. Timmerman took fourth, but Scott was sent home.

While he wasn’t sure of the final standings yet, Braune said that both Mount Airy and East Surry had earned enough team points to finish in the top 10.

Bishop qualified some wrestlers, and the Wilkes County schools are sending several to state, so this area represented itself very well this weekend, the coach said.
