HAYESVILLE — The East Surry Cardinals boys pulled out their third straight state playoff game win over the two-seeded Hayesville on the road in what Coach Jason Anderson called a gritty performance by the team.

The Cards won 59-56, and Scott Meredith led the team with 28 points. Eli Gilbert was the second high scorer for the Cards with 12.

This was the Cardinals’ third straight win on the road, and they will advance after going through a re-seeding process, said Head Coach Jason Anderson.

The Cardinal team was up 24-23 at half-time then got behind in the third. The boys rallied back to score 23 points total in the fourth quarter.

“We have overcome all season and we overcame again tonight,” said Anderson.

According to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s tournament brackets, the final teams to play in the Western Regional semifinals next Friday at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro will be East Surry, Hendersonville, Winston-Salem Prep, also from the Northwest Conference, and North Rowan.
