The Mount Airy Bears varsity baseball team clinched a hard hitting win by a score of 10-4 against the Surry Central Golden Eagles on Friday at home.

The Golden Eagles were the first to get on the board in the first inning with John Cagle starting and playing the entire game as pitcher. The Eagles scored the only two runs on Friday in the first. They were to be the only two scores the entire game for the Golden Eagles.

In the bottom of the first, Cagle hit a triple and knocked in two runs with both Isaiah Simmons and Logan Young getting in. Then Cagle scored on a Benji Hicks sacrifice, bringing the Bears ahead 3-2.

The second and third innings were quiet but things changed toward a hard Bear momentum soon after.

In the fourth, Cagle, David Sparger and Hicks all got in, bringing the score to 6-2. The Bears continued to hold the Golden Eagles and then scored two more runs in the sixth, after Austin Taylor and Kenny Overfelt got in. In the seventh and final inning, Hicks and Caleb Horton brought home two more.

Bears’ Head Coach Jon Cawley said, “We hit very well tonight.”

Cawley said all but one player on the team scored and he made it to third base.

Hicks had nine hits and Cagle threw seven strike-outs for the Bears against the Golden Eagles.

The Bears are scheduled to play next Tuesday at South Stokes High School.
