Seven local players and one coach were honored with the announcement of the all-district basketball teams this week.

East Surry’s Keri Fulp was named the District 11 player of the year, while North Surry’s Shane Slate was voted coach of the year by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association.

Fulp averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Cardinals. She also led the team in blocked shots and free throw attempts while handing out 1.6 assists and shooting 50 percent from the field.

“She meant a lot to our team; she did what it takes,” said Coach Keith Gunter. “These honors and awards are based on four years of hard work. I don’t think we would have been as successful without her playing the way she did.”

Laura Foster, Ashe County coach and chairperson for District 11, announced the three teams.

Fulp is joined on the first team by North Surry’s Kristina Rumplasch and Malaya Johnson. Also selected were Jackie Denny, North Wilkes, and Kelly Dulkoski, Jesse Carson.

Johnson was a triple-double threat many times this season. She averaged 11.6 points and 10.4 rebounds, but she also had some big games passing the ball to Rumplasch and Erin March.

Rumplasch was the Lady Hounds’ top three-point threat and averaged 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Two Surry Central standouts made the second team: Courtney Hegler and Cassidy Joyner. They are joined by Heaven Walters, Starmount, Keisha Corpening, Hibriten, and Allison Blackwell, Jesse Carson.

Hegler led the Lady Eagles in rebounding (8.8) and assists (4.6) and was second in scoring at 14 points per game.

Joyner led the team with 14.4 points per game to go with 4.5 boards and 3.7 assists.

For the third team, East’s Sydney Mosley and Mount Airy’s Kathryn Beasley were named along with Martha Mastin, Wilkes Central, Hannah Margolis, Watauga, and Alley Shumate, North Wilkes.

District 11 covers a dozen counties, as well as the Mount Airy and Elkin city school systems. The counties are Alexander, Allegheny, Caldwell, Iredell, Watauga, Surry, Stokes, Rowan, Ashe, Davie, Yadkin and Wilkes.

The boys didn’t have much luck making the district teams.

East Surry’s Scott Meredith was nominated for the honor, but wasn’t selected. West Stokes’ Josh Spainhour was the only Northwest player to make the list. He was named to the second team.

Bishop McGuinness and Winston-Salem Prep are in the Northwest Conference, but aren’t part of District 11.
