DOBSON — Surry Central rode 12 strikeouts by Austin Stevens to give the team a 3-1 conference win against East Surry on a cold windy Tuesday, but lost on Wednesday to West Wilkes in a non-conference game. The action puts the team’s record at 5-5 overall.
Also, for the Cardinals on Tuesday, Drew Wilson scored the first home run of their season and pitched the game’s first four innings.
The Golden Eagles hosted the Cardinals and Stevens set the tone immediately for Central by striking out Logan Sheets. Then center-fielder Caleb Mitchell caught a hard fly sent his way by Card Drew Wilson giving the Golden Eagles their second out. Stevens finished the inning recording a strikeout against Jeremy Gilley.
In the bottom of the first inning, shortstop Forest Kimbrell, led off with a single to left field. Stevens followed with a double to left-centerfield, scoring Kimbrell from first for a 1-0 lead and then later Stevens scored a run on a Cardinal error making the score 2-0, Golden Eagles.
In the top of the second, Stevens pitched a strikeout to open the inning, then the Cardinals’ Alec Wilson ripped a double to right field. Stevens then walked Cardinal Seth Brim. Next, Weston Payne hit a single, loading the bases for the Cards. Stevens then pitched his second strikeout in the inning giving. Next, Jess Wilmoth delivered for the Golden Eagles by making a play at first and netting a third out for the team by tagging Cardinal Scott Meredith out after a line drive hit.
In the bottom of the second, Card Pitcher Drew Wilson led a Cardinal charge by throwing three consecutive strikeouts against Central.
Then, Drew Wilson, first in the line-up in the top of the third, hit a home run giving the Cards life yet again. The home run was the Cards’ first of the season and it put the Cards on the board making the score 2-1.
The Golden Eagles then rallied in the bottom of the third after Mitchell got a single, stole second base; and made it home on a Cardinal error. Mitchell’s run made the score 3-1, Golden Eagles.
About the game against the Golden Eagles, East Surry Head Coach Barry Hall said, “They had some timely hitting and we didn’t. Coach Scott had the team ready.” Coach Hall also said Central had a night of great pitching and played good defense.
Drew Wilson had another good game and hit three of four, said Hall.
Drew’s brother, Alec Wilson, went two for three against Central. Of the seven hits by the Cardinals against the Golden Eagles, the Wilson brothers had five of them, said Hall.
Hall said the Cards could have done better defensively by not giving up unearned runs.
In the game against West Wilkes on Wednesday, Surry Central did not score any runs until the bottom of the seventh and finally got three on the board for a final score of West Wilkes, 10-3.
Also on Wednesday, East Surry won 6-4 over Elkin in a game that went eight innings.
Surry Central is scheduled to play Bishop McGuinness at home on Friday and East Surry will play North Surry on Friday at home.
