Police reports


• A Mount Airy man was jailed on felony drug and other charges after officers investigated a disturbance call at Riverside Park Monday, according to city police department reports. James Ruben Ruiz, 24, of 391 York Road, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia and also was the subject of an order for arrest for failing to appear in court which had been filed on April 21. He was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $2,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in District Court on Sept. 16.

• Also Monday, an attempted break-in was discovered at Rock City Diner on North Andy Griffith Parkway, where a door was dented from being hit during the incident.

• Katherine Hastings Yates, 28, of 1200 Edgewood Place Lane, is facing a larceny violation as a result of a July 7 incident at Walmart, where she was detained by store employees after allegedly concealing and leaving the business without paying for items valued at $41, including socks and weights. Yates’ court date is Aug. 12.

• Damage estimated at $400 was discovered on July 5 to a glass door at Hair World on North Main Street downtown. An unknown suspect apparently kicked and broke the door, but left the scene without making entry.

• SageSport on Rockford Street was the scene of a theft on July 4, when gray Sanuks slide-on shoes valued at $65 were taken by a known suspect.

• Violations of second-degree trespassing and a city ordinance for public drunkenness were filed against Jessica Ashley Laffoon, 33, of Woodlawn, Virginia, on July 2 after she allegedly went onto the premises of a residence on North South Street after being banned from that location earlier the same day. Kenneth Harper Dittrich III is the complainant in the case, for which Laffoon was jailed under a $500 secured bond. She is to be in Surry District Court on Aug. 11.

• Police were told on July 1 that a coin-operated snack machine at Lady Bug Laundry on South Street had been the target of a break-in and larceny. The crime involved an undisclosed sum of money being taken from the device after it was discovered that the door to the machine was unsecured.
