According to Matthew’s Five and Dime owner Matthew Laraviere, more than 500 visitors turned out for the opening of the new Matthew’s Five and Dime store on Rockford Street in Mount Airy. Friday’s grand opening event offered BBQ sandwiches for ten cents each and drinks for five cents.
According to Matthew’s son and General Manager of the new store Stephen Laraviere the Mount Airy location is the family’s third business location. He said that the company also operates another five and dime store and a “got-to-go clearance store in Galax, Virginia.
Laraviere said that the store’s motto is, “today’s brands at yesterday’s prices.” He went on to explain that the three stores are able to offer name brand items at cheaper rates than other stores by purchasing overstock and close-out items from larger businesses.
“We sell it cheaper than anybody,” said Laraviere, adding that the store had “anything and everything” available.
Laraviere said his family moved to the area from Florida in 2003. As auctioneers, the family started what has become a business with three locations with an initial $900 investment. According to Laraviere the family began running a discount furniture store in 2003.
“It’s been a progression,” Laraviere said of how the business has developed into what it is today.
Matthew Laraviere said that the Matthew’s business concept is different from most companies. “Most stores ask, ‘how much money can we make?’ We ask ‘what’s the cheapest we can sell this?”
