Nominations to sports hall of fame sought

Staff Report

The Surry County Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting nominations for the county’s Sports Hall of Fame. Nominations will be accepted through Sep. 4.

Individuals who are looking to nominate a person, team or organization for induction into the hall of fame can make their nomination at various community centers in the county, at the Surry County Parks and Recreation office or on the Surry County Parks and Recreation website at

Individuals can be nominated in one of two categories — the Hall of Fame and the Ring of Honor. Hall of Fame inductions will recognize individuals for outstanding achievements in the field of athletics as a player, coach or administrator.

Ring of Honor nominations recognize individuals, teams, companies or organizations that have made a significant impact on sports through contributions in the field of athletics.

Nominations can also be made through any Hall of Fame Committee member. This year’s members are Earl Shepperd, Eddie Wilmoth, Josh Smith, Scott Reynolds, Bob Ward, Donald Davis, Linda Davis, Adam McComb, Tony Duncan, Dave Diamont, Jim Wilmoth, Ron King, Darren Lewis, Tony Searcy and Jim Hall.

The committee will name this year’s inductees to the Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor sometime in lat September, and an induction ceremony will take place on Nov. 7 at Surry Community College. The names of this year’s inductees will then join inductees of past years on a monument at Fisher River Park.

Those in need of further information regarding the criteria for nominations are encouraged to contact Surry County Parks and Recreation Director Daniel White at (336) 401-8235.
