A former Clerk of Courts for Surry County was indicted recently on a felony fraud charge.
Patricia Coe Todd, 70, of Rockford Road, Dobson, was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses.
According to a warrant issued on March 25, Coe allegedly rented a property from Durham Properties, of Dobson, with intent to defraud “by presenting a check that was known to not have sufficient funds in the account with no intention of paying the debt.”
Surry County Detective Seargant J.D. Briles said, “It’s not that elaborate or fancy. It really boils down to a bad check.”
Briles said that Coe allegedly made no attempt to settle the debt after the incident occurred on Sept. 2, 2014.
Coe is scheduled to appear in Surry County Superior Court on Oct. 27.
