5K set for Saturday at East Surry High School

PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry County Schools Fourth-Annual 5K and Fun Run is set for Saturday at East Surry High School, with runners set to cross the start line at 8 a.m. – rain or shine.

The event is a fundraiser to benefit the SCS Educational Foundation, which helps all 19 schools in the system “by supporting enhanced learning opportunities to students in all grades,” according to information released by the Surry County schools. “The race also promotes health and wellness among the students and staff members in the school system as well as the community.”

The race will be chip-timed, and the course is USATF certified. Individuals wishing to participate can registioner online through 10 p.m. Wednesday at http://MADDASH5K.itsyourrace.com. Registration also will be accepted on the day of the event, from 6:45 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. The fee for participants is $30, or $20 for Surry County Schools students.

Race day packet pick-up is available at the East Surry stadium entrance from 6:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and early packet pickup up is available at the SCS administrative offices at 209 N. Crutchfield St. in Dobson on April 29 from noon until 5 p.m.

The USA Track and Field-certified course starts at the East Surry football stadium track and will end at the track’s finish line. The fun run will be held for participants ages 12 and younger on the school’s track at 9 a.m. Registration fee for the fun run is $15 per participant. Participants are encouraged to register in advance. All fun run participants will get a T-shirt and a medal.

Awards for the 5K will be presented after the fun run. Recipients must be present to receive awards. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female runners. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners in each age division. The age divisions are 10 years and younger, 11-13 years, 14-16, 17-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 years and older.

Surry Insurance is the event sponsor, while Mr. Dolly’s Lawn Service is the volunteer sponsor.
