Copeland Elementary students and staff celebrated Memorial Day with a visit from the Surry Central High School JROTC.
Copeland’s fourth/fifth-grade chorus sang the national anthem. Staff members shared with students about the importance of celebrating Memorial Day and ways Americans honor those who have died serving our country.
The SCHS JROTC demonstrated how to show respect to our flag and how to correctly fold the flag. MsGt. Greg McCormick shared interesting facts about the American Flag and served as host for a fun trivia game for K-5 students about the American Flag.
Over the winter, missed days from snowfall meant that the Memorial Day holiday had to be cut from the school calendar.
When this happened previously, the schools took the opportunity to educate children on the importance of the holiday and the U.S. military. The Board of Education agreed that such a day would be a good choice this year, too, prompting schools throughout the district to plan events.
