Local man injured in motorcycle crash

A local man was critically injured and airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Thursday morning following a motorcycle wreck on Old Highway 601 in Mount Airy.

State Highway Patrol Trooper Terry Bullington identified the victim as Barry Brinegar, 63, of Dover Church Road, Mount Airy.

Bullington said the victim sustained head injuries and had been wearing a helmet.

The wreck, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m. near Tom B. York Athletic Fields in the White Plains community, did not involve any other vehicles.

Brinegar had been traveling northbound on a 2004 Harley-Davidson and had just come around a “slight curve” in the road, the trooper said.

“He just laid the bike down and slid off the road,” said Bullington, noting that there were no indications that excessive speed or impairing substances contributed to the accident.

There was no other information available regarding Brinegar’s condition Thursday afternoon.
