WILKESBORO — A Wilkes County inmate escaped while working on a road crew Wednesday morning.

Jason Strickland was part of a Department of Transportation highway crew working on Old Salisbury Road in Wilkes County. He is believed to have been picked up by a female driving a dark-colored GMC Jimmy SUV, which then headed south on N.C. 115.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety said that corrections and law enforcement officers are actively seeking the inmate from Burke County.

Strickland was serving a prison sentence for larceny and breaking and entering and was due for release in October. He is a minimum-custody inmate assigned to Wilkes Correctional Center.
