Bikers out in force for charity

Part of a group of about 50 motorcycles roars out of Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy Saturday morning for the fifth-annual Phillip Mappa Memorial Ride. Participants were beginning a 95-mile round trip through Surry and Stokes counties as part of a fund-raising effort that aids various causes supported by Mappa, who died in 2011. About $1,000 was generated this year for two local people battling cancer, which claimed the ride’s namesake.
