LOWGAP — Family Dollar will soon open a new location here, offering a handful of new jobs in the rural area.

The store will be located at 8823 West Pine St. (about a football field from the post office) with a grand opening on Saturday at 8 a.m.

“Family Dollar shoppers will be greeted with fanfare and festivity,” reads a statement from the company. “Following the ribbon cutting, the store will host a variety of fun, free family activities.”

The company plans to give a free gift card to the first 50 shoppers when the doors open at 9 a.m.

According to Family Dollar, “the new, 8,400-square-foot store features Family Dollar’s newest layout, designed to make shopping easier than ever.” The store will feature merchandise at prices “typically below those of supermarkets.”

Gary Philbin, Family Dollar president and CEO, said, “Family Dollar is thrilled to open this store in Lowgap, and we look forward to becoming a positive part of this community. This new store will not only provide shoppers with our everyday value and convenience, but will also create jobs in the community.”

Surry County Board of Commissioners Chairman Buck Golding, who represents the Lowgap area on the county board, said he believes the store should be a hit in the community.

“I’m sure a lot of people will appreciate it being here,” said Golding. “I’m also sure the folks who run the Lowgap Grocery and Grill won’t be so appreciative, but that’s the way the system is supposed to work.”

While Golding said the locally owned store may see some business diverted to the bargain store, he also believes there’s enough of a market to support both entities.

“I think there’s enough diversity in what the stores offer to support both stores,” said Golding, noting Lowgap Grocery offers fuel and a sit-down eatery. “They may lose some daily bread and milk type of sales.”

Family Dollar spokesperson Bryn Winburn indicated the new Family Dollar store will employ about eight to 10 people in full- and part-time positions. Though the company did not release the pay rates of those employees, Family Dollar “strives to provide our team members with competitive compensation and benefit programs.”

The locatioin is the most recent of many bargain stores (between Family Dollar and Dollar General) popping up in Surry County, especially in outlying, rural areas.

“Family Dollar uses sophisticated modeling software, as well as real estate managers in the field, to help identify store location opportunities,” noted the spokesman. “Our goal is to open stores in communities to help serve the families in that immediate area. We look forward to serving new customers at this new location in Lowgap.”

According to Winburn, once open, the store’s hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sundays.
