Mount Airy’s Veterans of Foreign Wars post does many good things for veterans, but now it’s trying to incorporate a little fun, according to the post’s commander.

VFW Post 2019 commander David Raborn said on Thursday the post will roll out its new social program, a program which he hopes will foster companionship among the ranks and attract new and younger members.

After conducting a poll of the group’s members, activities which can serve to entertain members were identified, explained Raborn. On Thursday, the first of what he hopes will become many social gatherings will take place.

At 7 p.m. VFW members will meet at Mount Airy Lanes. The bowling alley is offering free shoe rental to veterans, and the first 20 veterans through the door will receive a card for a free game of bowling.

All members and potential members, which would include any veteran who was deployed to a hostile area throughout his or her years of service, are encouraged to show up and take part in a night filled with fun, said Raborn.

Additionally, prior to bowling, some VFW members will meet at The Loaded Goat for drinks and dinner. Potential members are also encouraged to attend this opportunity to mingle among fellow veterans.

Raborn said every year the VFW helps veterans in need with matters ranging from purchasing groceries to paying utility bills. However, members ought to have some fun while doing this. He hopes the new social program, which will include an event every other month, will help to foster an atmosphere filled with fun and camaraderie.
