Surry Community College will be hosting an old-time performance featuring a trio of musicians – Kirk Sutphin, Kevin Fore and Andy Edmonds – on Tuesday, March 21 in Room A-121 on the college campus in Dobson.
Each of the three musicians slated to perform has a background in playing the old-time genre, their sounds and playing styles influenced by their ties to Surry County and the surrounding region where old-time music exists as one of the area’s deepest, richest traditions.
Sutphin is both skilled on the fiddle and banjo and was the protégé of famous Surry County fiddler Tommy Jarrell. Sutphin performs regularly across the country and serves as an instructor at numerous music camps and workshops.
Previously a member of the Smokey Valley Boys, and a member of the old-time group Southern Pride, Fore is best known for his prize winning clawhammer banjo playing, a style he developed through the influence of legendary players such as Kyle Creed and Fred Cockerham. Fore is also a respected banjo builder and has made banjos for players around the world.
Edmonds grew up in a family of musicians and joined the Smokey Valley Boys as a guitarist and banjo player when he was a young man. Over the years of playing with many genre greats, Edmonds has accrued a wealth of knowledge on the history of old-time music in Surry County and has won numerous prizes at area fiddle contests. Edmonds plays fiddle and sings harmony for the Buckstankle Boys.
In addition to performing an array of songs the trio will provide those in attendance with commentary on the social and historical context of Surry County’s music scene. The public concert is an opportunity to share an area tradition with others thereby providing a window into some of the cultural practices of the Yadkin Valley region.
Those interested in the show may attend any of the three shows – 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Originally, the South Carolina Broadcasters were scheduled to play.
