Health Department Inspections


Health Department Inspections is a regular listing of inspections conducted in Surry County establishments by North Carolina health officials. The listing includes restaurants, schools, day care facilities, adult care and other facilities. The listings give the health inspector score, if applicable, along with the text of their findings in their words.

Po Folks Restaurant, 3072 Westfied Rd., Mount Airy. Inspected Dec. 7, score 95.5. Violations:

1. PIC present, Demonstration – Certification by accredited program, and performs duties 2-102.12 Certified Food Protection Manager – C – No one is certified as a food protection manager at this restaurant. The person in charge must be certified as a food protection manager.

2. Utensils, equipment and linens: properly stored, dried and handled 4-903.11 (A), (B) and (D) Equipment, Utensils, Linens and Single-Service and Single-Use Articles-Storing – C – Clean the utensil storage contianainers under the prep table.

3. Equipment, food and non-food-contact surfaces approved; cleanable, properly designed, constructed and used 4-501.11 Good Repair and Proper Adjustment-Equipment – C – (REPEAT) Repair the lid and side of the chest freezer and repair the door on the reach in cooler.

4. Non-food-contact surfaces clean 4-601.11 (B) and (C) Equipment, Food-Contact Surfaces, Nonfood-Contact Surfaces, and Utensils – C – Clean under the grill area. Clean the tops of the dry food containers. Clean the filters in the hood system. Clean the surfaces of the slicer that has accumulated debris from where it has not been in use in a long time.

5. Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean 6-501.11 Repairing-Premises, Structures, Attachments, and Fixtures-Methods – C – Repair the floor tiles in the kitchen that are cracked and damaged. 6-501.114 Maintaining Premises, Unnecessary Items and Litter – C – Remove newspapers and other paper items from the kitchen that are not necessary to the operation of the establishment.

Rockford Elementary School lunch room, 719 Rockford Rd., Dobson. Inspected Dec. 7, score: 100. Violations: None

Speedway, 912 East Atkins St., Dobson. Inspected Dec. 9, score 93. Violations:

1. PIC present, Demonstration – Certification by accredited program, and performs duties REPEAT VIOLATION 2-102.12 Certified Food Protection Manager – C- At least one employee who has supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service shall be a certified food protection manager by taking and passing an ANSI-accredited program (servsafe for example). This person (manager/supervisor) must be present during the operations including during the inspection.

2. Food-contact surfaces: cleaned and sanitized 4-601.11 (A) Equipment, Food-Contact Surfaces, Nonfood-Contact Surfaces, and Utensils – P- Observed no sanitizer in the facility. Sanitizer needs to be available and used to sanitize work surfaces and utensils.CDI By making chlorine sanitizer at 50-200 ppm in the bucket and 3-comp sink until store sanitizer is picked up at another store. 4-602.11 Equipment Food-Contact Surfaces and Utensils-Frequency – C- Observed mold growth in both ice machines in the lobby. Clean and sanitize following manufacturer’s instructions. Need to be cleaned at a frequency to preclude the growth of mold or soil accumulation.

3. Proper cold holding temperatures . 3-501.16 (A)(2) and (B) Potentially Hazardous Food (Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food), Hot and Cold Holding – P- At the time of inspection, food in the reach-in cooler was 49 f. TCS Foods may be stored between 42-45 degrees until january 1, 2019, and shall be stored at 41 f and below thereafter. The violation was corrected by moving the TCS foods to the large walk-in cooler until the reach-in is repaired.

4. Compliance with variance, specialized process, reduced oxygen packaging criteria or HACCP plan 8-103.12 Conformance with Approved Procedures – P,PF- At the time of inspection, the water temps and sanitizer strength logs were not being recorded as required by the approved variance to have the 2-compartment sink. CDI by discussing with the manager who will begin recording these items daily and will discuss at the team meeting.

5. Equipment, food and non-food-contact surfaces approved; cleanable, properly designed, constructed and used 4-501.11 Good Repair and Proper Adjustment-Equipment – C- At the time of inspection, the reach-in cooler was running high. Needs to run around 38 f to keep food stored at proper temperatures. Repairman called during the inspection. Shelving is rusty in the reach-in cooler. Repair.

Speedway, 626 CC Camp Rd., Elkin. Inspected Dec. 9, score 93. Violations:

1. PIC present, Demonstration – Certification by accredited program, and performs duties REPEAT VIOLATION 2-102.12 Certified Food Protection Manager – C- At least one employee who has supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service shall be a certified protection manager by taking and passing an ANSI-accredited program (servsafe for example). This person must be present during the inspection.

2. Food-contact surfaces: cleaned and sanitized 4-602.11 Equipment Food-Contact Surfaces and Utensils-Frequency – C- Observed mold growth in the ice machine. Clean and sanitize following manufacturer’s instructions. Clean and sanitize at a frequency to preclude the growth of mold and soil accumulation.

3. Toxic substances properly identified, stored, and used 7-204.11 Sanitizers, Criteria-Chemicals – P- At the time of inspection, the sanitizer was not strong enough. Make the sanitizer at 200 ppm and monitor. CDI by making new sanitizer.

4. Compliance with variance, specialized process, reduced oxygen packaging criteria or HACCP plan REPEAT VIOLATION 3-502.11 Variance Requirement – PF- Need to verify variance on the warewashing sink. Sops need to be posted and a log will need to be kept.

5. Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean 6-501.12 Cleaning, Frequency and Restrictions – C- Cleaning needed in the storage room and bathrooms. Clean the bathroom walls. Store items off of the floor to facilitate cleaning. 6-501.11 repairing-premises, structures, attachments, and fixtures-methods – c- chipped floor tile in the dish washing area. Tighten toilet seat in the women’s restroom.
