If tentative plans hold true, today Gov. Pat McCrory will be visiting Mount Airy, stopping at Snappy Lunch, and possibly strolling down Main Street, maybe even paying a quick visit to a few other businesses as he does. He may even take questions from the public during his stop.

Later, he is set to visit with an undisclosed business in the area, details of which have not been released.

This will be the governor’s first trip to the city since taking office in January, and his visit is part of a Main Street Tour program he has been undertaking since becoming governor.

McCrory, like all elected officials, has received his share of criticism. On this very page we’ve taken issue with a number of his actions, beginning on his first day in office when he chose to keep private the inauguration, an event that should be a public proceeding, to yesterday’s signing of a regressive, wrong-headed voter bill that has already been challenged in court.

Today, we encourage those who will be in downtown with an opportunity to meet the governor to ask whatever questions you wish. If you want to express support for him or his policies, then do so. If you have tough questions, then ask those.

But we also ask that all remember — agree or disagree with his policies, he is the sitting governor of North Carolina, and that position carries a certain level of due respect. Our hope is that, while not shying away from the opportunity to ask the governor whatever question might come to mind, that as a community we show him the respect and the courtesy the position deserves.
