Downtown Mount Airy has announced the second annual Rock the Runway Fashion Show scheduled for Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. The fashion show will be held at Old North State Winery, and will feature the latest fashions and accessories available from Downtown Mount Airy merchants.

According to Downtown Coordinator Lizzie Morrison, the event’s goal is to help reduce childhood hunger in Surry County. The Rock the Runway Fashion Show will benefit the Flat Rock Elementary School Dragon Pack Program, which provides weekend food supplies to students in need.

Admission to the Rock the Runway Fashion Show is free with a non-perishable food donation and/or a monetary donation to the Flat Rock Dragon Pack Program. Acceptable foods suitable for donation include: Spaghetti-O’s (pop lid), peanut butter crackers, soup, Pop Tarts, fruit gummies/roll-ups, instant oatmeal, single serve fruit cups, canned meat, Ramen Noodles, pudding cups, cereal bars, instant potatoes, instant grits, single serve cereal boxes, Easy Mac, Beanie Weenies, pasta and rice dinners, granola bars, and other similar products.

Morrison pointed out that the consequences of hunger can be critical to vulnerable and growing children. Whether it involves skipping meals, eating less that is needed to live a healthy life, or making due with foods that are filling but lack nutrition, the effects of hunger can be devastating.

“Research indicates that even mild under-nutrition experienced by a young child during critical periods of growth may lead to reductions in physical growth and affect brain development, threatening a child’s natural abilities and potential over a lifetime,” said Morrison. “Potential consequences for our communities and nation include higher rates of school failure, poorer returns on educational investments and weakened workforce productivity when children reach the age of employment.”

Morrison indicated the Rock the Runway Fashion Show has been strategically scheduled during “tax free” weekend and coincides with a Downtown Sidewalk Sale to offer patrons an extra incentive to shop in the heart of our community. This is a great opportunity to support our local children as well as our local economy.

Participating apparel merchants include Dragonfly Boutique, F Rees Co, F Rees Ladies Upstairs, Karen’s on Main, Main Oak Emporium, Mayberry Consignments, Scarlet Begonias, The Addition, and What’s Needlin’ Ewe.

Goodie bags filled with gifts, coupons, and information about participating merchants will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Other Downtown Mount Airy merchants also will be offering specials during the fashion show and tax free holiday.
