Police believe a pre-existing medical condition may have been the cause of an accident that claimed the life of a Pinnacle man Thursday evening.

According to Capt. Alan Freeman of the Mount Airy Police Department, Richard Carol Bowman, 55, was pronounced dead at Northern Hospital following the 6:28 p.m., accident.

The accident occurred on U.S. 52 near its intersection with Bluemont Road.

Freeman said Bowman was traveling south along the highway in a 2000 Chrysler 300 when he left the roadway, crossed the median and struck a tree head-on in the median of the highway near the Hollows Motel.

“At this point, we believe the beginning of the accident was due to medical problems,” he said. “There were no other cars involved, and he had some medical problems that we assume were the cause of the initial loss of control.”

Bowman was transported to Northern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Freeman said the accident is still under investigation.
