The chill in the air can mean only one thing: It’s time for a holiday season favorite — the Deck the Halls winery passport program.
This year’s event features 10 wineries in the region, and participants in the program receive a wine tasting from some of the region’s premier wineries, a hand-crafted Christmas ornament and a wine pairing recipe.
“Additionally, there will be live music on the weekends at various wineries, and each winery will take a turn serving its special recipe,” said Craig Distl, spokesman for Very Surry, which helps promote the event.
The eight-week program gets under way on Nov. 15, and participants say it is designed to span the holiday season.
“It’s a fun way for people to celebrate the holiday season, a treasure map guiding them through the Surry area wineries,” said Louis Jeroslow, winemaker at Elkin Creek Vineyard. “Come enjoy the season by visiting wineries, seeing beautiful vineyards and spending time with new friends met along the way.”
Wineries participating in the Deck the Halls program include Brushy Mountain, Carolina Heritage, Elkin Creek, Grassy Creek, McRitchee, Olde Mill, Round Peak, Slightly Askew, Stony Knoll and Surry Oak.
Distl said the only requirement to participate is to purchase a program passport, which is available at all 10 wineries. They may also be purchased at www.SurryWineries.com.
Passports prices are $60 a person or $95 for a couple.
In addition to the tastings, ornaments, recipes and entertainment, the passports include a discount at 15 other businesses in Surry County, including businesses offering accommodations, restaurants and pubs, spas and retail stores.
According to Jeroslow, the wine tour is becoming a holiday favorite.
“The feedback from past years is that people have really enjoyed the experience,” he said. “They mention the hospitality and warm welcome they receive. One of the wonderful things about the Yadkin Valley appellation is that it’s still very approachable and casual. You don’t have to be an aficionado to come taste the wines and enjoy the vineyards.”
