PILOT MOUNTAIN — Three young men are facing charges after one apparently butt-dialed 911 while allegedly stealing a truck.

“Best I know, they attempted to steal a maintenance truck at East Surry High School, and one of them when they sat down in the truck butt-dialed 911, so the dispatcher was able to hear everything they were saying,” reported Pilot Mountain Police Chief Darryl Bottoms Thursday.

He said Sgt. G. Holt was the arresting officer, and he intercepted them on West Main Street near the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery, not far from the high school.

While Bottoms didn’t have a complete arrest and incident report yet, he said Nathan Mills, Quentin Thompson and Dylan Beck, all local residents between the ages of 18 and early 20s, were charged with breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and larceny of a motor vehicle, both felonies.

The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

“They were hearing everything they were talking about and kind of pinpointed where they were at for officers,” Bottoms said of the dispatchers.

“We’ll take them any way we can get them,” he added of the suspects.
