The Surry County Sheriff’s Office has charged four county residents in what they say was a theft ring operating in the county for the past several weeks.


According to Sheriff Graham Atkinson the ring, which was operating primarily in the eastern part of the county, involved thefts of items like string trimmers, chainsaws, lawn mowers, hand tools and other construction-related items, as well as personal items.


“The thefts began around July first,” Atkinson said.


“Through the investigation, detectives were able to determine that the larcenies were committed by two members of the group while others were responsible for disposing of the stolen goods for cash,” he added.


Proceeds from the thefts were then allegedly split among the group.


Charged in the incident are:


• Damien Nathanial Watson, 22, of Dumont Lane in Pilot Mountain. Watson has been charged with eight counts of felony breaking and entering, eight counts of felony larceny, two counts of felony obtaining property under false pretenses, four counts of the possession of stolen property, one count of felony safe-cracking, four counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of the misdemeanor posses ion of stolen property.


• Patrick Ryan McGraw, 34, of Frans Road in Westfield. McGraw has been charged with two counts of felony breaking and entering, two counts of larceny after breaking and entering, one count of felony possession of stolen property, one count of felony safe-cracking, three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, one count of misdemeanor larceny and three counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen property.


• Brittany Nicole Knight, 21, of Dumont Lane in Pilot Mountain. Knight has been charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count of felony larceny after breaking and entering and one count of the misdemeanor possession of stolen property.


• Michael Wayne McMillian, 44, of Cain Road in Mount Airy. McMillian has been charged with one count of felony receiving stolen property, one count of felony obtaining property under false pretenses and one count of the misdemeanor possession of stolen property.


Atkinson said McGraw has been arrested and was released on a $27,500 secured bond.


McMillian has been arrested and was released on a $12,500 secured bond.


Knight has been arrested and was released on a $5,000 secured bond.


“Watson is currently a fugitive on the above charges,” Atkinson said, asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to call the Sheriff’s Office at 401-8900.


“If anyone has bought or received any property or knows of anyone who has obtained any property from any of these individuals, they are asked to contact the sheriff’s office,” he said.
