Local swimmers clean up at Powerade Games

CHARLOTTE – Swimmers from the North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC) tallied 11 gold medals and 21 total medals in the 26th-Annual Powerade State Games of North Carolina recently.


The swim team entered competitors in age groups from 9-10 up to 19-29. The races took place at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.


“The meet went really well. All of the swimmers swam great,” said PAC coach Leah Tunstall. “This meet was an excellent lead-in for our championship meets coming up in the next few weeks.”


In the 19-29 age division for adult women, East Surry graduate Chelsea Lawson earned five golds in the 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter backstroke.


Lawson, now a rising junior at Campbell University, also captured a bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke and 200 meter individual medley.


For the 15-16 division, Kelsey Tunstall, daughter of the coach, captured gold in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke, 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter individual medley while collecting silver in the 100 meter freestyle and 100 meter breaststroke. Tunstall, a member of the East Surry swim team, also earned a bronze medal in the 400 meter freestyle.


In the girls 11-12 year old division, Sydney Beck took gold in the 100 meter backstroke while collecting silver in the 50 meter and 200 meter backstroke. Mikki Nunn collected a silver in the 100 meter breaststroke while Avery Tucker earned a bronze medal in the 50 meter butterfly.


In the 9-10-year-old girls division, Hadly Tucker took home the bronze medal in the 50 meter breaststroke.


In addition to the medalists, PAC had several team members with top-25 finishes during the two-day event.


These included Abby Bruce, Olivia Marion, and Carly Bullington in the 9-10 year old girls division; Destini Hudson, Olivia Dunning, Sarah Southard, and Gracie Pruitt in the 11-12 year old girls division; Nolan Gilliam in the 11-12 year old boys division; Anne-Louise Tunstall in the 13-14 year old girls division; Alex Butner in the 13-14 year old boys division, and Kayla Simmons in the 15-16 year old women’s division.
