WALNUT COVE — East Surry had three players in double figures in a 66-53 victory over South Stokes on Tuesday night in the season opener.
Carson Long led all scorers with 18 points to go with nine rebounds. Seth Brim had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Scott Meredith finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Jacob Bowman had eight points and four assists and Cody Ashburn had four assists as well.
East (1-0), which is missing five varsity players due to football, got plenty of help Tuesday from the junior varsity team.
“We are fortunate right now that we have some good JV players, too,” coach Jason Anderson of East Surry said. “I think our guys were tired of practicing and they were ready to play tonight.”
Anderson said South Stokes used a box-and-one to try and shut down Meredith, and his team did a good job of attacking inside with Brim and Long.
East led 41-26 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Sauras pulled to within 10 points, but East finished the quarter on a 7-0 run.
“Guys are excited. We wanted to make sure they can contain that excitement, and not run around like their hair is on fire the first five minutes,” Anderson said. “Getting that first (game) under your belt is important for confidence.”
Jacquan Martin, ElJ Scales and Devin Feimster had a team-high 12 points for the Sauras.
