South Stokes’ Nicole Rogers shot a 41 to lead South Stokes to a team win at Cross Creek Country Club.

Rogers, the only player to break 50, teamed with Cheyenne Tomlinson (55) and Rachel Brown (60) for a team score of 156, six strokes better than Ashe County and eight better than East Surry.

Ashe was led by Sarah Hardin’s 51, Savannah Brooks’ 55 and Olivia Barr’s 56.

East Surry’s top three performers were Whitney Cox (52), Laken Brown (55) and Katie Tweet (57).

Mount Airy came in fourth with a 169. Haley Hagwood led with a 52, then Rachel Ray at 58 and Abby Brady 59.

Surry Central came in fifth with 177 as three of the four players are new to the sport.

Autumn Senter returns for the Lady Eagles, but another returning player, Salem Poindexter, missed the match with a doctor’s appointment, said Central coach Daniel Broughton.

Autumn struggled to get her rhythm going on the fairways, then the greens were tough to read after a recent aerating left holes in the ground, the coach noted.

The other three weren’t with the team last season: Star Burton (61), Ellie Kidd (60) and Katie Branch (63).

Broughton said he fully expected to see all three shoot the maximum 63, but Burton and Kidd did a little better than that.

This was the first time Katie has ever playing nine holes in her life, Broughton said. For all three newcomers, there is a challenge to walk nine holes and face fatigue and yet stay mentally focused for up to three hours.

North Surry only has two golfers this season, and previous coach Daniel Johnson didn’t return because of other obligations.

Broughton, who coached North Surry’s boys in the spring, said he’d be glad to take on the two Lady Greyhounds.

All of the girls practiced together one day this week, then went out to eat as a group and had a chance to bond, Broughton said. That’s what golf is all about — having fun with friends, along with getting exercise and developing self-confidence.

North’s Charlotte Moser shot a 62 at Cross Creek. Kelsey Badgett, who just started Monday with her first practice, didn’t take part this week, but will join Moser next week at the Yadkin Country Club in Yadkinville.
