RONDA — Fresh off a tough 1-1 tie with Surry Central, the Granite Bears beat East Wilkes 6-3 in soccer.
Mount Airy improved to 3-0-1 with the win.
Luke Needham scored two goals, and one goal each came from Christian Cabrera, Jeremy Chappell, Hunter Clawson and Gentry Williamson.
There were three other times the Bears appeared to have scored, but the officials called violations that wiped out the goals, explained coach Will Hurley.
With this match squeezed between Surry Central and Thomasville, Hurley knew he needed to spread out the minutes and not wear anyone down.
Despite the constantly shifting lineup on the field, Hurley said he was pleased with the way the team moved the ball around.
Freshman Robert Brown, brother of all-state performer Mitchell Brown, continues his strong play, getting two assists Wednesday.
Two sophomores, Matthew Dodd and Malcolm Malone, also provided an assist each.
Needham showed good potential as a freshman and now he is one of the senior captains, said Hurley, along with John Hardy, Cabrera and Clawson.
Keeper Scott Kunkel, who saved 11 shots against the Eagles, stopped seven from East Wilkes while staring into the blazing sun for half the game.
The Bears host Thomasville tonight.
