PILOT MOUNTAIN — Bishop McGuinness swept East Surry 9-0 in tennis Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Cardinals have played some good tennis this season, but the Lady Villains look like the team to beat this year in 1A.
Coach David Kidd said he knew the match would be tough when he saw how many of last year’s players returned. Only Mount Airy’s three consecutive championships have kept Bishop from getting a title of its own.
Still, the Cards didn’t lay down for the Villains, winning at least one game in every match.
“I was pretty happy,” said Kidd. Several of the games went to deuce multiple times and could have gone either way.
Despite the heat, the Cards put out a lot of effort and played well against a great team, he said.
Bishop top seed Morgan Auger beat Tiffany King 6-0, 6-1.
Kyndall Cortes beat Haley Manuel 6-0, 6-1. Anna Owen topped Allie Hawks 6-0, 6-1.
Anna Petrangeli blanked Mikayla Manuel in the first set 6-0, but the East sophomore fought hard and nearly took the second set before falling 7-5.
Fifth seed Becky Auger beat Kayla Keener 6-1, 6-1.
Nicola Saia won over Klaudia Tucker 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles Cortes/Owen won 8-2 over King/Keener.
The Manuel sisters lost to Morgan Auger and Petrangeli 8-1.
Hawks and Tucker lost 8-1 to Becky Auger and Saia.
The Cards travel to North Stokes on Tuesday.
