ELKIN — The Lady Cardinals opened the volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep of Elkin Monday.
East Surry dominated the second set, but played sloppy in the first and third frames, said head coach Caleb Gilley.
The Cards won 25-17 in the first set, but most of the Lady Elks’ points were given to them by the Cards, he said.
Among the mistakes were eight bad serves and some unforced errors on swings.
In the second set, East played much better with more energy and valued the ball, said Gilley. With the Cards not giving away any points, the Elks struggled to score in a 25-4 blowout.
In the third set, the visiting team went right back to missing serves and making mistakes, he said.
Still, the Cards put together enough good plays to win 25-17.
Hopefully the team learns from this and moves on, said Gilley. The team will get a chance to practice today, then travel to North Wilkes Wednesday.
Cheyenne Kota led the Cards with 17 kills, while Kristel Hicinbothem had 10 and Kacie Markle eight. Jessi Marion added five kills, and Sydney Marion had two kills and two blocks.
Setter Olivia Sheets passed out 31 assists to go with four service aces.
On the back line, Sydney Mosley led the team with 15 digs to go with seven aces.
Haley Whitaker added three aces.
