ELKIN — The Lady Bears came back from a set down to beat the Lady Elks 3-1 in volleyball Thursday night.
Mount Airy got a late start leaving home as the city schools had open house that evening.
That got the JV game started about two hours later than usual, then the varsity came after that.
In the first set, the home team got the upper hand. Elkin took the set 25-20 and put the pressure on the Bears.
Mount Airy responded with three straight wins.
The Bears took the second set by nine points (25-16) and then edged Elkin 25-22 in the critical third game that put the Bears ahead 2-1.
Then Mount Airy finished the night with a 25-16 fourth set.
With Autumn Mason still out with a concussion, and Katie Hicks out, too, the Bears front line was a little thin.
Freshman Sadie Brooks had a good debut earlier in the week against Surry Central and earned the team player of the match award from Coach Chuck Morris. So Morris wanted to give Brooks plenty of chances Thursday to see if she responded well again.
Brooks had more swings than anyone on the front line and finished with 18 kills and only four errors.
Amy Kunkel had six kills and only two errors.
Abby Harold, Megan Fleming and setter Sarah Lankford all had two kills each. Samantha Kovach and Lillie Smith had one kill each.
Lankford set up almost all of those kills with 28 of the team’s 30 assists. Out of 95 ball-handling chances, Lankford only gave up a point once.
Libero Skyler Flippen led the team with 19 digs, while Brooks had 12, Fleming and Kunkel seven each, and Charli Hiatt and Lankford six each.
The Bears had eight stuffs, led by Harold with three and Brooks and Kovach two each.
At the service line, the Bears were very accurate, getting 90 percent in play.
Brooks and Lankford were both 23/24 serving, with five aces.
Kunkel was 18/19 with two aces, and Harold was 14/15 with an ace.
Today, the Bears travel to Sparta for a tri-match with Alleghany and West Stokes. Then the Bears hold their home opener Tuesday against Walkertown.
The Lady Wolfpack went 0-15 last year and is 0-3 so far this season without winning a single set.
