DOBSON — High school students from all over the region will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the healthcare industry’s high-demand and lucrative careers during CAMP MED 2013.

The health career awareness camp will take place July 10-12 at Surry Community College’s campus in Dobson. The camp includes visits to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. The students will also experience individual and group job shadowing along with classroom presentations and demonstrations. Wendy Rash, Staff Flight Nurse for AirCare, will share her perspective on working for AirCare’s critical transport team with the students.

“It’s a super opportunity for these students to take an inside view of the healthcare industry to see if it fits their career goals,” said Anne Marie Hardy, SCC’s director of Career Services. “Often students feel their goals are validated, but just as often their goals change as a result of attending the camp.”

SCC offers an associate’s degree in nursing along with other degree, diploma and certification options in the nursing field. Students also can earn a degree to become a Physical Therapy Assistant through the program at SCC.

CAMP MED 2013 is sponsored by the Northwest Area Health Education Center, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and Surry Community College.

Students who have been chosen for this year’s camp, along with their corresponding high schools, are as follows: Davi Barbour, Mia Brady, Zai Lor, Kristen Parries and Vioshia Simmons of Mount Airy High School; Erin Cave, Nicole Defreitas, Ariana Fiets, Kristen Kartes and Rebecca Ray of Elkin High School; Samantha Bowen, Gloria Monita, Daniel Motley and Katie Priddy of South Stokes High School; Catherine Brown, Morgan Cheek, Bradley Hutchens and Nidia Rosales of Forbush High School; Sabrina Dodson and Ryan James of North Stokes High School; and Nancy Rubio, Megan Swaim, Janay Williams and Erin York of Starmount High School.
