It’s hard to imagine a rainier time than what Mount Airy has experienced so far this month, but that was the case in July 1964 when the city received a whopping 13.37 inches.

But just past the halfway point of July 2013, local rainfall totals are on pace to break that nearly 50-year-old record, according to figures from F.G. Doggett Water Plant.

As of Monday, 8.37 inches had been recorded so far this month at the plant, Mount Airy’s official weather-monitoring station. The average July output here is only 4.76 inches.

“We’ve still got a half a month to go,” David Puckett, water plant supervisor, said Monday of the likelihood the record will be broken with a continuation of a rainy pattern that also produced above-average totals in June.

The 8.37-inch figure does not include any additional amounts that fell Tuesday, when some parts of town were drenched while only “a sprinkle” had occurred at the water plant by late afternoon, a spokesman there said.

While July tends to be thought of as a drier month, it actually has been a wet time for Mount Airy at various intervals over the years.

Coming in at number two in the rankings for the rainiest Julys ever recorded here was 1939, when 10.58 inches fell, based on water plant statistics.

The next-highest total, 9.13 inches, was logged in July 1943.

July 1931 holds the honors for the fourth-all-time-wettest seventh month of the year in Mount Airy, at 8.86 inches.

Weather records have been kept here since 1924.

If the precipitation record for July in Mount Airy is broken this month, it will be the second time this year for that to happen.

Nearly 10 inches drenched the area in January — 9.93 to be exact, which broke a 77-year-old record. In January 1936, 9.17 inches fell, which had stood as the all-time high for the first month of the year in Mount Airy.
