WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington surgeon who performed emergency surgery on 6th District Representative Howard Coble has said the procedure was successful.

Coble, 82, was rushed to George Washington University Hospital Tuesday afternoon after complaining of severe abdominal pain shortly before a scheduled appearance at a Washington luncheon.

He was scheduled to speak during a lunch meeting known as the Tar Heel Circle.

According to his chief of staff, Ed McDonald, the surgery repaired a right-side hernia. The surgeon said he found no other concerns, and the congressman is expected to make a full recovery.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the congressman was sitting up and taking liquid nourishment.

Coble spent Tuesday night in the hospital for observation, and was scheduled to be released Wednesday, pending no further complications.
