DOBSON — Anyone new to Medicare and feeling a bit intimidated by the process of enrolling is invited to a free Medicare seminar held by the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).

According to local SHIIP Coordinator Carmen Long, the seminar has been set for Tuesday at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Surry County Center in Dobson. The seminar is scheduled to begin at noon and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

Long explained SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance which offers free, objective information about Medicare, Medicare supplements Medicare Advantage plans, prescription drug plans, Medicare fraud and abuse and long-term care insurance.

The title of the seminar is Welcome to Medicare and it is open to anyone new to the program or interested in a quick explanation of Medicare including a question and answer session. Participants are encouraged to register by calling 401-8025. Interested persons may call Long, who is also a family and consumer education extension agent at 1-800-443-9354.

She said that SHIIP serves as an advisor to participants and their is no selling involved because the program is a state operated service.
