DOBSON — Surry County Schools officials have announced a series of three events which will showcase student work, curriculum opportunities and information on educational initiatives. The “District Spotlight on Educational Excellence” sessions have been separated into three districts and each event is set to be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Surry County Schools offers students many opportunities to excel, academically, athletically, and artistically. To share and showcase these opportunities, we have planned these three Spotlight on Educational Excellence nights,” said school Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves. “Our students from elementary, middle and high school will showcase talents through the use of technology and music, while educators will overview some of the newest programs, legislation, and resources exposing Surry’s students to a world class learning environment.”

Reeves said the events are not only open to all Surry County Schools parents, but also to any parent who desires to see the best public education has to offer.

Interested parents may attend any and all of the spotlight events. School officials have indicated county and town commissioners also are invited to the showcase events. The Central District Spotlight is set for Sept. 17 at Surry Central High School in the gymnasium. The North District event will be held Sept. 19 at North Surry, and a similar showcase for the East District is set for Sept. 26 at East Surry High School.

According to the agenda supplied by the school system, “poster seasons” giving information will be held in classrooms. These are concurrent sessions and topics include the Read to Achieve program, Instructional framework, Career and Technology Education pathways and the Surry Virtual Academy.

Information booths will be set up in the host school’s gymnasium during the spotlight events. Subjects will include the system’s information management software, Haiku, 21st Century Skills, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Extracurricular activities including clubs and sports, Healthy School Initiatives, the Surry Early College, Services for Exceptional Children, Services for English as a Second Language (ESL) students, Services for Pre-K and Junior Officers Training Corps (JROTC).

Additional showcases are planned for the school lobbies. School principals have been enlisted to assign students who will share their projects.

School robotics coaches and teams will be on hand to discuss the school system’s robotics competition, and choral directors and band directors and students in both programs will be available to discuss chorus and band. Visual arts teachers and students also will participate and field any questions showcase participants about visual arts opportunities.
