DOBSON —The director of the Stokes County Department of Social Services (DSS) will be crossing county lines next week to assume the helm of the Surry County Department.
Members of the Board of Commissioners announced late yesterday afternoon that Kristina Dawn Preston, who has steered the Stokes County department since 2010, will take over the vacant director of Surry County DSS position on Oct. 28.
The position has been vacant since late may, when long-time Director Wayne Black resigned to take over the state DSS department.
Preston has been employed in the Stokes County department since 1993, holding the positions of income maintenance caseworker II, social worker II, social worker III, and work supervisor III prior to assuming the director’s seat.
County officials say the experience garnered in her two decades of work in DSS has “given her extensive knowledge in all areas of the social services field.”
“She has extensive training and experience in all aspects of social services programs management,” Human Resources Director Sandra Snow said in a press release announcing the appointment.
Preston holds a master’s degree in liberal studies from UNC-G, and a bachelor’s degree from Meredith College.
She is a native of Stokes County, and attended South Stokes High School. She and her husband and two daughters live in King, but Preston has said she plans to relocate to Surry County.
Commissioners Chair Eddie Harris said he is confident in the future of the department under Preston’s guidance.
“(Preston’s) 20-year career has given her extensive knowledge in all areas of the social services field,” he said. “We are confident she will continue the leadership of the county’s Department of Social Services in the exemplary standards and performance for which Surry County is known statewide.”
County Manager Chris Knopf agreed, saying Preston’s experience made her a great choice.
“The board and I are looking forward to working with (Preston), and feel honored to have her as part of our team,” he said.
For her part, Preston said she is eagerly awaiting assuming the Surry County director’s role.
“I’m really looking forward to joining Surry County’s team,” she said. “The social services department has an excellent reputation, and I’m excited to be given this opportunity.”
Preston will receive an annual salary of $82,524.
The County’s Department of Social Services is located in the Surry County Government Center, 118 Hamby Road, Dobson, North Carolina. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
