• A Dobson man reported being a victim of an assault and common law robbery this week in Mount Airy, according to city police department reports. James Robert Brintle of Turkey Ford Road advised police late Tuesday night that an unknown suspect had struck him and took a red Samsung cell phone with a green case, valued at about $330, while he was at the SAR Express convenience store on South Main Street.

• A Charlotte man was charged with five felony violations Tuesday after allegedly attempting to cash a forged check at Food Lion on West Lebanon Street. Police were summoned to the store on a false-pretense call, and after a brief investigation arrested Jemari DePriest Smith, 20, on charges of forgery of an instrument, possession of a counterfeit instrument, conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument. Smith was confined in the Surry County Jail without privilege of bond and is to appear in District Court on Nov. 7.

Earlier Tuesday, two counterfeit checks were cashed at Food Lion on West Pine Street, and someone conspired in an attempt to do so at Food Lion on South Andy Griffith Parkway. No figures were listed for any of the checks involved in the incidents at the three stores.

• Phillip Fitzgerald Mitchell, 27, of 536 Linville Road, is facing a second-degree trespassing violation that was filed on Sept. 25 when he was found on the Emily B. Taylor Greenway, after having earlier been banned from all city property. Fitzgerald is to be in Surry District Court on Oct. 29.

• Property valued at nearly $1,700, including a Stihl chainsaw and weedeater, a trash pump and two fuel cans, were reported missing on Sept. 25 from a building at the home of Floyd Eugene Rees on Marion Street.

• Evelyn Harrell Ellison, 56, of 130 Appa Villa, Cana, Va., was arrested on an outstanding warrant for larceny on Sept. 23. Ellison was held in the Surry County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond, with a Nov. 18 District Court date set in the case, which stems from an incident the same day at Walmart. A wallet containing money, owned by Barbra W. Lynch of Winston-Salem, was stolen after being left unattended, with the sum involved not listed. Ellison was implicated after a brief investigation.

• A theft occurred at Walmart on Sept. 17 in which an unknown party placed merchandise valued at $383 in bags, including shirts, jeans, shoes, Farberware, 11 sheet sets, three area rugs and a Keurig coffee maker, then pushed a shopping cart containing the items out of the store without paying.

• Police were told on Sept. 17 that an unknown suspect had loaded a shopping cart with $325 worth of goods at Walmart, including eight items of assorted bedding, 25 sheet sets, seven pillow covers, three cutting boards and a rice cooker, and left the store without paying. Although reported on Sept. 17, the incident actually occurred on Aug. 30.
