WHITE PLAINS— Portions of Turner Mountain Road near Crystal Lane were closed Wednesday as authorities worked to free the driver of an overturned concrete truck.
According to Surry County Emergency Medical Services Director John Shelton, the call was received at 9:19 a.m.
Shelton said much of the rescue operation this morning involved stabilizing the truck so the driver could be removed safely, which took more than 30 minutes. He said the driver remained conscious and alert throughout the operation and has been transported to a hospital for treatment.
The road remained closed for several hours while North Carolina Department of Transportation officials cleared debris. Agencies responding to the call included Surry County Emergency Medical Services, Dobson Rescue Squad, White Plains Volunteer Fire Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident remains under investigation by Highway Patrol Officer Robbie Ellison.
