• A Mount Airy man was jailed earlier this week after allegedly hitting his brother in the face in front of officers, according to city police department reports. Curtis Howard Beck Jr., 62, of 1207 Northridge St., was encountered by police during a civil disturbance Sunday at his residence, where the incident occurred. Beck, who was charged with assault as a result, was kept overnight in the Surry County Jail before being released Monday on a written promise to appear in District Court on Feb. 3.

• Police have located a stolen firearm at the What Do You Want? gun and pawn shop. The Model 29 Smith & Wesson .44-magnum handgun valued at $500 and owned by Joe Vance Lowe of Hamlin Ford Road, Dobson, was recovered Saturday at the business on North Andy Griffith Parkway. A shop employee told police that a suspect had brought the gun in to sell or pawn and it was discovered to have been stolen. The case was still under investigation at last report.

• Property owned by Shirley Ann Crabb of Simpson Mill Road was stolen during a vehicular break-in at a Northern Hospital of Surry County parking lot, which involved shoes, a comforter, lotion and other items with a total value of about $75. They were taken Saturday from an unsecured 1987 Buick Century.

• Rita Armenta Perez, 56, of 412 Arlington St., was cited Saturday for allegedly allowing a dog, a pit bull, to run at large in violation of a city ordinance. Perez had received a verbal warning in February and was cited after further violation was noted by a neighbor, police records state.

• A cab driver is facing offenses including allowing a front-seat occupant in a taxi in violation of a city ordinance, as a result of a traffic stop on Newsome Street. The case originated when Tonya Matthews Brown, 33, of 216 Rawley Ave., an employee of Mayberry Taxi on Riverside Drive, was observed running a stop sign Saturday at Newsome and Jeffries streets, according to police records. Brown, who also was cited for speeding, is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Jan. 28.

• Police were told last Friday that an unknown individual had passed checks on a closed account in order to purchase goods at Subway on South Main Street. No monetary figure was listed for the loss.

• Also last Friday, personnel at Robby’s on North Main Street reported that a known suspect had used worthless checks to obtain property from the business earlier this year. No loss figure was listed for the unidentified property.

• Cornelia Franklin Emanuels, 77, of 618 Worth St., was cited for a city leash law violation last Friday after allegedly allowing a dog to run at large off her property. Emanuels is slated for a Jan. 22 District Court appearance.

• Elijah Ray Smith, 16, of 446 Split Rail Road, Cana, Va., and James Edward Joyce Jr., 19, of 113 Earl Joyce Lane, Mount Airy, were charged on Dec. 19 with trespassing and a skate park violation at that facility on Riverside Park, from which both teens had been banned in April 2012. They are to be in court on Feb. 6.

• Billy Dale Gammons Jr., 18, whose address was not listed, was arrested on a second-degree trespassing violation on Dec. 19. Details regarding the alleged offense, for which Gammons was held in the Surry County Jail under a $250 secured bond, were not given. He is scheduled to appear in District Court on Jan. 2.

• Tabatha Sumner Castevens, 35, of 113 Shady Circle Lane, Dobson, was served with warrants on charges of obtaining property by false pretense, a felony, and making a false report to a police station on Dec. 18. The charges stem from an investigation of a report made by Castevens on Nov. 18 that a stolen debit card had been used to pay rental fees at Leisure Tyme Rentals on West Pine Street. She is free on a written promise to appear in court on Jan. 21.
