PILOT MOUNTAIN — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a portion of N.C. 268 in Surry County on Monday to begin replacing the bridge on N.C. 268 (Key Street) over U.S. 52.

Crews will close N.C. 268 at the roundabouts near the bridge to begin removing the existing structure, which was built in 1960. The bridge is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means that although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards no longer in use and requires costly maintenance to remain functional.

That portion of N.C. 268 will be closed until June 2015 while the bridge replacement project continues. During that time, a detour will be in place directing N.C. 268 eastbound traffic to U.S. 52 South to Pilot Mountain State Park Exit, then from Pilot Knob Road to U.S. 52 North. N.C. 268 westbound traffic will be detoured to U.S. 52 northbound to the Cook School Road exit, then from Cook School Road to U.S. 52 southbound.

This project is part of a $3,139,883 contract to replace two bridges in Surry County: the bridge on N.C. 268 over U.S. 52 and the bridge on Cook School Road over U.S. 52. Contractor for the project is Smith-Rowe, LLC.
