Fresh off a win in the state 10-and-under Cal Ripken Championship, a local baseball team is advancing to the Southeast Regional Tournament in Charleston, S.C., this week.
Surry North, coached by Eric Montgomery and assistants Zane Poindexter and Mike Chesnet, will travel to South Carolina on Wednesday before competing in pool play on Thursday and Friday.
There are 20 teams from across the region who will compete in the tournament. The teams are split into the American League and National League.
Surry North will play in the National League, South Division pool with teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
If it does well in its four pool games, then the team advances into a single-elimination bracket for the weekend.
Surry North will practice at Graham Field across from the Jones Resource Center today at 4 p.m. and Monday at 6:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Surry North plays a 12:30 p.m. game against a team from Williamsburg, Va. Then after a brief rest, the team plays West Raleigh at 5:30 p.m.
On Friday, the two games are closer together.
Surry North faces a Brentwood, Tenn., team at 3 p.m. Then the boys turn around and play at 5:30 p.m. against a squad from Aiken, S.C.
“We are trying to get donations or sponsors for lodging expenses to get these boys there,” said Josh Nixon, father of one of the players. “Anything would be greatly appreciated.”
“Our families have spent a lot of money to reach this point,” said Montgomery.
To win the state title, the team had to take part in several tournaments leading up to the championship, explained the coach. That meant making five trips to Boone and two trips to Hickory. The parents have to pay for gas, food and beverages for the trips and admission fees to get in.
Those interested in sponsoring the team can call Natasha Robertson at 325-5410, Becky Johnson 755-1155 or Josh Nixon 648-4709. Make any checks payable to Surry County Cal Ripken.
