DOBSON – Dozens of girls turned out for Surry Community College’s volleyball camp last week.

Held July 15-18, the camp was open to ages 6-16, with the morning sessions dedicated to beginners and afternoons filled with more advanced players.

“I thought we had another great turnout even with several camps going on in the area,” said SCC volleyball coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “We had 40 kids from Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain, Elkin and areas of Wilkes County. It’s a lot of fun for the campers because they are from different schools and get to interact with people who they don’t ordinarily even get to meet.”

Marion-Kiser was assisted by a gang of former and current players.

Alumnae players who helped with the camp were: Jennifer Coe, Alysha Shelton, Brittany Tolbert, Caitlin Voigt and volleyball assistant Emily Roberts.

Eight of the nine current volleyball players also found time to help with the camp, including incoming freshmen Dana Brown (Mount Airy), Ashley Smith (East Surry) and Tiffany Coe and Meagan Hutson (Surry Central).

Rising sophomore Alexis Allen (Mount Airy) is a defensive specialist and outside hitter for the Knights. This was her second time helping with the camp.

“It is a really good experience. I enjoy working with the younger kids to teach them something they will really enjoy doing,” said Allen, who is studying medical office administration.

“With the younger players, you have to do something to keep their attention and make it fun. Then with the older kids, who are more experienced, you have to make sure they are improving in the areas where they want to excel. I think it gives the younger kids a different perspective, having younger coaches at camp.”

“The camp is a great coaching opportunity for the players,” Marion-Kiser said. “They work well with the girls. It’s also an opportunity for them to keep playing and teach these up-and-coming girls skills that they have learned.”

Many of the Knights volleyball players also coach Junior Olympics with one of the volleyball squads for the Surry Storm group, which fields teams for ages 10 up to 18 years of age.
