PILOT MOUNTAIN — Senior Jennifer Harrell will play football for the East Surry Cardinals during the upcoming 2013 high school football season.
Varsity Head Coach David Diamont said it will be Harrell’s first time playing football. She is playing on the offensive side of the ball in practice, he said.
The coach said students sometimes kid around about playing football at East Surry. When they do show up, they are not cut or eliminated from the team, said Diamont.
Diamont said once Harrell expressed her interest, she became part of the team.
“She has worked like everybody else, and will be treated like everybody else,” said Diamont.
Diamont said there have been no comments in favor or opposing Harrell being on the squad. Diamont coached another female football player, Barbi Manchester, at Mount Airy from 1993-94, he said.
Meanwhile, Diamont said the Cardinals’ focus is on being the best football team they can be.
The first scrimmage game will be held at Elkin on Aug. 13 at 6 p.m.
