The Surry Central girls’ varsity volleyball team took a commanding 3-0 win over Wilkes Central in its season home opener on Monday.
Before the match against Wilkes Central, Head Volleyball Coach Carrie Hutchens said they were going to play to win and not take anyone lightly.
Hutchens said the 2013 team is well-rounded and works together well. The team has good, smart hitters and good passers, said Hutchens.
“I have all the confidence in the world in these girls,” said Hutchens.
Libero Kendra Johnson closed out the first match 25-19, Cassidy Joyner delivered 10 serves in a row to end game two 25-14. Johnson again closed with serves in game three for a 25-8 score.
In serves, Brook Lewis recorded 2-2, Kaitlin Kidd 11-2 (2 aces), Cassidy Joyner 16-18 (3 aces), Kelsey Taylor 5-6 (1 ace), Tori Blevins 4-7 (1 ace), McKenzie Danely 9-9 (2 aces), Kendra Johnson 9-11 ( 4 aces), Holly Mason 7-7 (3 aces).
In kills, Joyner led with 10, Kidd 4, Taylor 4, Blevins 3, Danely 2, Johnson 1, and Laura Dobbins 1.
In assists, Kidd led with 12, Mason 3; and Dobbins 7.
In blocks, Blevins led with 2, Taylor, 1, White 1; and Danely 1.
This year’s team includes six seniors, six juniors and returns four starters.
Hutchens said at the game’s conclusion that she saw some things she liked but added, “We could have done better.”
