DOBSON — Oscar Valle, forward on the Surry Central boys varsity soccer, team kicked in all five goals during the season opening 5-0 shutout victory over Elkin.
Head Varsity Soccer Coach Blake Roth said Valle usually plays midfield but got the job done at forward against Elkin.
“He was at the right place at the right time and made heads up plays. He is a hustler,” said Roth.
Valle got support from Francisco Rangel with two assists, Adrian Gonzalez with one and Jose Siete with one.
Roth said three starters were out but expects them to return in the upcoming match sscheduled against 3A Statesville on Wednesday in Statesville. The coach said he expects the non-conference tough competition against a 3A school to make the team better and are matches he schedules on purpose.
Roth expects the team to come into every competition to win but the shutout victory over Elkin exceeded his expectations, he said. Especially, Roth said, since Elkin finished in the top of an elite 1A conference and lost few starters.
Central finished with a 17-3-2 record last season. They will come in with experience this season with 12 seniors, five who were starters. In addition to juniors with playing time, Roth moved two freshman to varsity, Julio Sanchez and Arturo Lopez.
Goal keeper Artemio Cortes is a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. “He is as fundamentally sound of a goal keeper as I have seen,” said Roth.
Midfield is supported by “workhorse” Gonzalez, the senior play of Rangel, and the youth of Sanchez and Lopez. Midfield play is technically sound, said Roth.
Surry Central finished just behind West Stokes in the 2A conference standings in 2012.
Roth said Central’s realignment into the 2A Western Piedmont Athletic conference should prove competitive. Roth called Forbush a perennial powerhouse in soccer.
“We have to know that every game can either win us or lose us in this conference,” said Roth.
The 2013 roster includes Artemio Cortes, Julio Sanchez, Victor Solis, Fernando Talavera, Uriel Secundino, Justo Cristobal, Reymundo Calderon, Osber Valle, Jose Siete, Adrian Gonzalez, Jose Avalos, Moises Pineda, Juan Padilla, Luis Carapia, Tanner Whitt, Carlos Secundino, Victor Santiago, Trent Day, Ramiro Gonzalez, Fredy Cruz, Marcos Lovaton, Francisco Rangel, Arturo Lopez, Miguel Rocha.
