The Lady Bears opened the 2013 tennis season with a dominant performance over East Wilkes.

Not only did Mount Airy win the match 9-0, but none of the singles matches even went to a third set.

Davi Barbour, Haley Thomas, Bree Hughes, Carley VanHoy and Bailey Jackson won their matches in straight sets without ever trailing, according to assistant coach Rodney Pell. He is filling in this week while head coach Scott Kniskern is out of town.

Fourth seed Jai Daniels opened her match by holding serve, but then she fell behind 1-2. After she and opponent Kayla Pardue held serve to make it 2-3, Daniel came back to win the next four games for a 6-3 set.

Daniels kept the momentum going with a perfect 6-0 second set, giving her 10 straight wins to finish the match.

Top seed Barbour whitewashed Molly Calloway 6-0, 6-0. Second seed Thomas was the first to finish, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Shanisha White.

Third seed Hughes won 6-1, 6-2 over Kennedy Lester. Fifth seed VanHoy won 6-1, 6-0 over Abby Burchette. Freshman Bailey Jackson won the sixth slot 6-1, 6-0 over McKenzie Stokes.

Barbour and Thomas, who have played doubles together for two years, are back together again at the top spot. They got off to a slow start, losing the first game and trailing 1-2 before taking seven of the next eight for an 8-3 win over Calloway/White.

In the second spot, Hughes and Jackson won 8-4 over Lester/Pardue. The score was 3-2 before the Bears pulled away.

Daniels and VanHoy won 8-1 over Stokes and Maggie Weatherman.

While unofficial, the Bears also went 7-0 in extra matches where the reserves played just one set.

Emily Pardue beat Brooke Sealey 6-1 in singles, then five doubles teams won their sets, too.

The winning doubles teams were Cheyenne Rhodes/Baylee Atkins, Abby Hagwood/Carson Orange, Coleman Craddock/Eryn Wood, Logan King/Anna Ilyasova and Emily Lowe/Carly Clark.

Today the Lady Bears are scheduled to travel to Watauga, weather permitting, then they host Atkins on Thursday for the Northwest Conference opener.
