Bears leading tennis, but rain halts play
by Jeff Linville Staff Reporter
A surprise shower halted tennis play between Mount Airy and East Surry on Thursday.
The sun was shining, and temperatures on the court were above 90 degrees at the start of the singles matches. Only one match finished before the rains fell.
Mount Airy fourth seed Carley VanHoy won 6-0, 6-0 over East’s Allie Hawks.
The Bears took the first sets in the other singles matches.
Top seed Davi Barbour was ahead of Tiffany King.
With second seed Haley Thomas out with strep throat, the Lady Bears’ Bree Hughes won the first set with Haley Manuel.
Jai Daniels was over Brooke Tickle at the third spot. Bailey Jackson was leading Mikayla Manuel on court five, and Abby Hagwood led against Sarah Gibson.
With crowded schedules for both teams, Bear Coach Scott Kniskern said plans are to resume the match on Sept. 24.
