CLAYTON— The Surry Community College men’s golf team opened their second match of the season at Neuse Golf Course on Monday finishing third out of the six teams.

The Surry Knights competed on a 7,011 yard golf course with a 72 par, “extremely challenging for the best of players,” said Head Golf Coach Tom Pendergraft.

“We came into a blind golf course and I expect better scores tomorrow,” said Pendergraft.

After Monday’s finish, Sand Hill Community College led with a 285 score. North Carolina Wesley Community College shot second with 295, and Surry Community shot a 306.

Coming in fourth, Patrick Henry Community College shot 317. In fifth, Johnson Community College shot 332; and Louisburg Community College shot 335.

Nick Thomas for Sand Hill was the individual medalist and shot a 68.

Pendergraft said all teams in the competition except the Knights played a practice round before Monday’s match.

Pendergraft said it was unusual for the Knight players to shoot this high and he attributed part of it to course difficulty.

Pendergraft said most of the Knights players did not know the depths and the landings of the greens upon tee off. He will be looking for the golfers, in particular the lower seeds, to cut their strokes in today’s competition.

The Knights will tee off at 9 a.m. today to finish the second half of match.

After day one’s finish, McKinley Johnson led the Knights shooting a 71. Kirk Casstevens shot 75. Other scores by the Knight scores were: Ben Vogler 79, Ryan Wilson 82 and Ryan High 85.

On Sept. 28-29, the Knights’ men and women golf teams will play at Spring Lake in a match hosted by Central Carolina Community College.

The Knights won their first competition last week at Silo Run.
